Softball Sweeps UW-Whitewater; Mueller Reaches 100 Career Wins

BETTENDORF, Iowa - The Wartburg College softball team hosted the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at TBK Sports Complex on Sunday, March 7, sweeping a doubleheader with 9-3 and 4-3 wins. 

After the game one victory, the Knights rallied for an extra inning walk-off win during game two for head coach Jamie Mueller's 100th career win. In her sixth season, Mueller becomes the third head coach to reach 100 career wins at Wartburg. 
 

With the pair of wins, Wartburg improves its overall record to 7-1 on the season. 

Wartburg 9, UW-Whitewater 3
The Knights' offense scored nine runs off eight hits, scoring two runs in the first, third, and sixth innings as well as a three-run fourth inning.

After UWW opened the game in the top of the first with a 1-0 lead, the Knights answered with a two-run single from Leah Campos to claim a 2-1 advantage. 

Wartburg's bats produced again in the third and fourth innings, including two-RBI doubles from Kaci Sherwood and Sydney Fellows

Leading 7-3, Wartburg added another pair of runs in the sixth off a UWW error.

Maddie Rog received the win and improved her record on the year to 3-1 in the pitcher's circle, allowing two earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched. Ashley Nelson pitched a scoreless final 1.2 innings.

Wartburg 4, UW-Whitewater 3 (8 inn.)
Down 2-1 in the seventh inning, the Knights tied the score at 2-2 to extend the contest to extra innings. 

Sydney Illg drew a base on balls and came around to score after stealing second and scoring from a Lauren Frerichs RBI. 

 UWW scored in the eighth to reclaim a one-run lead at 3-2. In the bottom half, Sherwood led off with a double and Tarah Wehde followed with a walk. A sacrifice bunt from Olivia Brecht then put the runners into scoring position.

After a Warhawk error, Reegan Deputy, who pinch ran for Sherwood, scored to tie the game. Up next, Jordan Swiatkowski played the hero with an RBI single to score Wehde as the Knights' walked off with the 4-3 win.

Wehde started in the pitcher's circle, throwing five innings. After relief from Lauren Reicks, Carly Salutric ended up receiving the win upon relieving Reicks for the final two batters in the eighth.
