Men's Soccer Prevails Behind Gossin's Game Winner

WAVERLY, Iowa - Wartburg men's soccer improved to 3-1 in American Rivers Conference action when it defeated Simpson College 2-1 on Saturday, April 10 at Salzwedel Field. Freshman Yushin Gossin tallied the game-winner in the 88th minute to propel the Knights to victory.

The Orange & Black (3-1 A-R-C) will continue through their conference-only schedule on Tuesday, April 13 when they travel to Dubuque, Iowa to take on Loras College (3-0-2, 2-0-2 A-R-C) at 5 p.m.

It was a hot start for the Knights when they jumped ahead 1-0 in the fifth minute. Senior Jack Palen won the ball near midfield and found a streaking Kevin Duque down the left wing. Duque was one-on-one with the keeper and slotted his shot into the left corner to give Wartburg the advantage.

Simpson responded well and forced Wartburg's goalkeeper Brennon Woody to make five saves in the first half. Despite trailing in shots 10-3, the Knights took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Storm leveled things in the 49th minute when Jordy Triana-Vasquez found himself open at the back post and converted on his opportunity. Neither team was able to pull away for much of the second half. When overtime looked inevitable, the Knights recorded the game-winner with just two minutes to play.

Sophomore Caleb Halleran sent in a cross from the right wing that found Gossin at the top of the box. The freshman calmly smashed a right-footed volley into the left corner to give Wartburg the 2-1 lead. The Knights were able to halt the late push from the Storm and take the 2-1 victory.

Wartburg totaled four shots compared to Simpson's 17. The Storm also held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks taken. Duque led the Orange & Black with two shots while goalkeeper Woody registered eight saves in the win.
