Lacrosse Defeats Cornell, Records First Win

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Wartburg lacrosse picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, April 10 when it upended Cornell College, 15-12 at Van Metre Field at Ask Park. The Knights now hold a 4-2 all-time series lead over the Rams. 

The Orange & Black (1-7, 1-2 MWL) will return home on Wednesday, April 14 for another conference contest against the University of Northwestern (1-2, 0-1 MWL) at 4:30 p.m. 

Much of the match was back-and-forth and Wartburg threw the first punch when it took a 3-1 lead 12 minutes into the contest. The Rams responded with a 5-2 run of their own and grabbed a one goal advantage. Ellie Johnson and Lindsay Langford managed to tie the game before Bri Greiskalns scored the final tally of the first half to give Wartburg an 8-7 lead going into the break. 

Cornell regained control of the match when it went on a 4-1 run in the opening five minutes of the second half. The Knights halted the Rams' momentum when Johnson (2), Greiskalns and Jordan Lorenzen all registered goals for Wartburg. Johnson and Greiskalns each capped of the match with two tallies in the final five minutes to give the Knights a 15-12 victory. 

Freshman Johnson had a career day, totaling a season-high six goals and 10 shots. Junior Greiskalns added five tallies and four assists to help lead the Knights. Sophomore Langford also posted a hat trick for the first time in her career. Freshman goaltender Brittney Shipman earned her first win of her career behind six saves. 

Wartburg recorded season-highs in points (25), goals (15), assists (10), shots (38) and shots on goal (28). The Knights went 11-of-18 on their clear attempts and held an 18-10 advantage in draw controls.
