Baseball Splits Monday Doubleheader at Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Wartburg College baseball team split its American Rivers Conference doubleheader at Simpson College on Monday afternoon, falling 11-2 in game one and winning 13-1 during the series finale.

After a split on Sunday, the two teams split the four-game series after the same on Monday. Wartburg's overall record moves to 9-13 and 7-9 during A-R-C competition.

The Storm opened the day scoring 11 runs off nine hits, forcing three Wartburg errors.

Leading 3-0, Simpson put the game out of reach for the Knights with an eight-run fifth inning to gain an 11-run margin.

Wartburg scored a pair in the sixth, scoring on a Cole Wessling RBI single and plating another on a wild pitch.

Jacob Murray suffered the loss, his first of the year. He started the game and lasted four innings while allowing three earned runs.

The Knights bounced back during the season finale, paced by a nine-run output in the third inning.

In the third, the Orange & Black scored nine runs off seven hits. Ben DeKruyf led off the inning with a triple and scored on a Steven Lawrence single. Parker Ridge followed with an RBI single of his own, scoring Bryce Butler for the eventual game-winner.

Zachary Walton, Cael Boehmer, Ethan Hayes, Butler batted in runs, along with DeKruyf's second triple of the inning. 

In the sixth inning, DeKruyf's third hit of the day scored a pair of Knights to extend Wartburg's lead to double digits.

Aaron Eybers pitched the final two innings, disallowing any runs. William Armstrong started on the mound and earned the win, allowing three hits in four innings pitched.
