WAVERLY, Iowa - The Wartburg College baseball team opened its 12-game homestand Saturday afternoon at Harms Stadium, splitting an American Rivers Conference doubleheader versus Buena Vista University, falling 4-1 in game one prior to a 13-3 game two victory.
Wartburg's overall record moves to 10-4 (8-10 A-R-C). Through two games, the Knights outscored the Beavers 14-7 and outhit BVU 21-13.
Zachary Walton,
Steven Lawrence, and
Max Goodhue led the offense with four hits each on the day.
Buena Vista 4, Wartburg 1
With the series opener locked at 1-1 through the first six innings, a Buena Vista triple with the bases loaded gave the Beavers a 4-1 lead.

The triple knocked out Wartburg starting pitcher
Jacob Murray.
Aaron Eybers then came in to pitch in relief and retired a pair of BVU batters to escape the jam.

Wartburg was unable to generate a rally in the bottom half to suffer the 4-1 loss.

Down 1-0, the Knights tied the game in the fourth inning. Goodhue led off the inning with one of his two hits on the game, a double to left field. He came around to score on the next at bat with a Walton double.

Wartburg and Buena Vista tallied six hits apiece.

Lawrence and Goodhue each had two hits. Murray's record dropped to 3-2 on the season. He allowed two earned runs in six innings pitched with four strikeouts.

Early offense and a five-run eighth inning led to the Knights winning on the 10-run rule in game two over the Beavers.
Wartburg scored 13 runs off 15 hits, led by a 3-for-5 and 2 RBI game from Walton, who also scored three runs. Lawrence, Goodhue,
Ben DeKruyf, and
Cael Boehmer also tallied two hits each.
The Orange & Black scored three in the second and four in the third to grab a 7-2 lead. After allowing a run in the first, starting pitcher
Darren Kilpatrick settled in and went seven innings, allowing two earned runs. He earned the win to improve his record to 3-2.
Leading 8-3, the Knights ended the game with a five run, five hit eighth inning. RBI singles from
Keaton Gray, Lawrence, and Goodhue gave Wartburg a 12-3 lead before another single from Walton scored
Ethan Hayes to end the game.
