Wartburg Remains Perfect in Battle of Unbeatens

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Wartburg women's soccer grabbed sole possession of first place in the American Rivers Conference when it downed Loras College 2-1 on Tuesday, April 13 at the Rock Bowl. Junior Kate Luers tallied the game-winner to give the Knights their third victory over the Duhawks in the past four meetings.

The Orange & Black (5-0 A-R-C) will conclude their week with a home match against Central College (1-3 A-R-C) on Saturday, April 17 at Salzwedel Field with kickoff set for 1 p.m.

The Knights began the scoring in the 14th minute when Luers recorded her first goal of the contest. Loras responded well and put up 11 shots in the opening period but failed to find the back of the net. Wartburg totaled four attempts in the first half and went into the intermission with narrow one-goal advantage.

The Duhawks' continued pressure finally paid off in the opening stages of the second half when Abby Eriksen tied the game off a corner kick and Wartburg gave up its first goal in 410 minutes. The Knights found a rhythm offensively from that point forward and proceeded to put up 11 shots in the frame.

In the 74th minute, the Knights sent in a corner kick that Luers was able to get behind and propel Wartburg to a 2-1 lead. The Orange & Black continued to frustrate the Loras back line as Katie Berglund nearly sealed the game with a great chance in front of net with 34 seconds remaining. Wartburg would go on to squander the last attempt from Loras and take the victory.

The Knights were out shot 17-15 in the contest but held an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Marissa Lopez tallied six saves in the match and earned her fifth win. In addition to a two-goal game, Luers paced Wartburg with a career-high seven shots, including five on target.
