Wartburg Downs Monmouth in Road Contest

MONMOUTH, Ill. - Wartburg lacrosse captured its second win of the season on Saturday, April 17 at the April Zorn Memorial Stadium when it defeated Monmouth College, 11-8. Junior Bri Greiskalns recorded a game-high five goals, which marked her sixth straight hat trick.

The Knights (2-8, 2-3 MWL) will conclude their 2021 season on Wednesday, April 21 when they travel to St. Paul, Minn. for a contest against Hamline University (6-4, 4-0 MWL) at 4:30 p.m.

After conceding the opening goal of the match, Wartburg went on a 7-1 run that featured tallies from Ellie Johnson (3), Greiskalns (3) and Olivia Christianson (1). Monmouth capitalized on a man advantage and recorded the final goal of the first half and went into the break facing a 7-3 deficit.

Much of the second half was back-and-forth as the two teams traded goals. Junior Eleanor Fiedler earned her third goal of the season to put the Knights ahead by four with 26 minutes remaining. The Fighting Scotts brought the game within two before sophomore Christianson recorded her second of the afternoon. With just 10 minutes left, Monmouth found some momentum and trailed by two yet again. However, Greiskalns slammed the door shut with her fifth goal of the match with just under three to play to give Wartburg the 11-8 victory.

The Knights held a 29-20 advantage on shots and a 23-14 lead in shots on goal. Wartburg was 7-of-15 on its clear attempts and won the draw control battle, 18-3. The Orange & Black held their opponent to just eight goals, which was a season best.

Sophomore Lindsay Langford led Wartburg with two assists and freshman goalkeeper Brittney Shipman earned her second win behind six saves.
