WAVERLY, Iowa – The Wartburg College women's soccer team capped off its 2021 spring American Rivers Conference schedule with the league title, finishing the season with an undefeated record after defeating Luther College 2-0 Wednesday evening at Salzwedel Field.
The Knights went 7-0 during the condensed A-R-C schedule that was moved from the fall of 2020 to the spring of 2021. Wartburg shut out six of its seven opponents and had its originally scheduled season finale versus Nebraska Wesleyan University canceled due to health and safety concerns.
Junior forward
Joy Smith of Polk City scored the eventual game-winner the first half, tapping in her third goal of the season at the 35
th minute during a scramble in the box.
At the break, the Knights held a one-goal advantage and led 5-4 in shots while corner kicks were even at two apiece.
Wartburg added insurance at the 58-minute mark as
Katie Berglund's shot went top left past the Luther goalkeeper for her third tally on the season, assisted by
Annie Place for the 2-0 lead, where the score stood for the rest of the contest.
Kate Luers led the offense with six shots. The Knights double Luther's shot total by a margin of 14-7.
In goal,
Marissa Lopez made three saves to earn the win. She started all seven games and totaled five shutouts with a 7-0 record.
