Knights Split With Norse on Monday

DECORAH, Iowa - The No. 16-ranked Wartburg College softball team split an American Rivers Conference Monday doubleheader at rival Luther College, winning game one 5-3 prior to a 1-0 game two setback.

Wartburg's overall record moves to 17-4 and 8-3 within the A-R-C.

Wartburg 5, Luther 3
The Knights' early offense set the tone during game one's victory, claiming a 4-0 lead after four innings.

Wartburg scored each of its runs to gain the opening lead off RBI singles from Olivia Brecht, a two-RBI single from Sydney Fellows, and another RBI single from Kaci Sherwood.

Luther cut into Wartburg's advantage with runs in each the fifth, sixth, and seventh inning. Leading 5-2 heading into the final bottom half after Sherwood homered to left in the seventh, the Norse threatened after a leadoff single and coming around to score on a wild pitch, but Maddie Rog shut the door to earn her second save of the season.

Ashley Nelson made the start in the pitcher's circle and allowed three earned runs in five innings pitched. She earned the win and moved her record to 5-0 on the season.

Sherwood led the offense, going 3-for-3 at the plate, including her A-R-C-leading 11th home run on the year and two runs scored. Leah Campos also added two base hits.

Luther 1, Wartburg 0
Tarah Wehde and Luther's Sam Thompson limited both offenses to three hits apiece, competing in a pitcher's duel during game two.

The home team scored the eventual game-winner in the second inning, scoring unearned on a Wartburg error.

Down 1-0 in the seventh, Fellows earned a base on balls with one out, but Thompson and the Luther defense induced a double play to end the game.

Wehde took the loss as her record falls to 5-2, allowing three hits in six innings pitched.

Sydney Illg, Brecht, and Madison Stoaks tallied Wartburg's base hits.
