Wartburg Tennis Set to Host Two Matches Saturday

WAVERLY, Iowa – Wartburg men's and women's tennis is slated to host matches against Grandview College (Iowa) and Hamline University Saturday, Sept. 11 at Waverly-Shell Rock High School Tennis Courts as well as Meirink Family Courts. .

Last Time on the Court
Wartburg women's tennis opened its season with a 2-1 record with sweeps against the University of Dubuque and Saint Ambrose University. In their last match, the Knights fell to Minnesota St. University-Mankato for their first loss of the season. Olivia Phillips has a 2-1 record in the number one spot in both singles and doubles for the Knights. Madison Overmann is 2-1 in the singles number two spot and partnered with Phillips in the number one doubles spot.

The men's team will be making its 2021-22 season debut Saturday. The Knights finished their 2020-21 slate with an 11-13 overall record and 4-4 ledger in the American Rivers Conference. Senior Lucas Huffman led Wartburg in the number one singles spot all of last season posting an 18-5 record. During last season, Huffman passed Chris Buckingham for the most career single wins at the number one position with 36 victories. The Orange & Black return three All-Conference members this season in Huffman, Jackson Eells and Cade Davis.  
 
Grandview College
The Grandview women's tennis team has played one match this season as they opened the season with a 5-2 win over Buena Vista College. Last season the Vikings posted a 4-12 team record but ended the last nine matches with a 4-5 leger. Wartburg women's tennis has won seven of eight matchups, including seven straight matches, versus the Vikings with its last loss to them coming in 1987.
The men's team will be making its 2021-22 season debut in Waverly. The Vikings will look to improve on last season's 3-10 record. The Knights hold a 9-5 advantage in head-to-head victories against the Vikings but lost the last matchup in 2019 5-4.

Hamline College
Both the women's and men's team will be opening their season in Waverly taking on Grandview and then following with an afternoon match against Wartburg.
Hamline women's team posted a 1-11 record last season, including an opening loss to Wartburg 6-3. The Pipers went winless in conference play last season in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). The all-time series between the schools is tied at one win a piece.
In the 2020-21 season, the Hamline men's tennis team posted a 3-10 record and went 1-8 in MIAC play. The Pipers opened last season with a home victory against Wartburg 6-3. Hamline leads Wartburg 3-1 in head-to-head wins going into Saturday.
