St. Joseph, MN. - Wartburg women's soccer won 4-0 in its first road match of the season as they traveled to St. Joseph, MN. to take on the College of Saint Benedict Saturday, Sept. 3.
The Knights picked up where they left off from Wednesday's season opener with a strong offensive showing in today's match. The Orange & Black had a 10-3 shot advantage in the first half as well as a 3-0 lead in corner kicks. The strong start resulted in two first half goals for Wartburg.
Freshman
Lauren Kirkle started off the scoring for the Knights with a goal coming in the 16
th minute. Kirkle has now scored in consecutive games to start her collegiate career. The next strike came in the 26
th minute when
Sarah Campbell netted her first goal of the 2021 season off an assist from
Kate Luers.
The Orange & Black continued to attack offensively and put in two more goals in the second half to extend the lead to 4-0. The first of the two came in the 77
th minute when
Joy Smith fired a goal past the keeper. That was followed by a goal just over three minutes later in the 80
th minute when
Katie Berglund scored her first goal of the season with an assist from Campbell.
The Knights finished the contest with a heavy advantage in shots, 19-6, as well as in corner kicks which finished 10-3 in favor of Wartburg.

Marissa Lopez finished the match with five saves and earned her 4
th straight shutout dating back to the 2020 spring season. Campbell paced Wartburg offensively with 4 points (1 goal, 1 assist).
Next time on the pitch
Wartburg will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 7 set for 5 p.m. when they take on St. Olaf College at Salzwedel Field for a non-conference matchup.
