Knights Dominate in Football Opener

WAVERLY, Iowa— In front of a boisterous and excited crowd, Jace Moore had three rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown in a decisive victory by the Wartburg College Knights over the Monmouth College Fighting Scots.
 
The Knights posted a 44-3 victory over the Fighting Scots.
 
Scoring Plays
  • The Knights were knocking on the door of the Fighting Scots endzone at the end of the first quarter as the time ran out. In the opening seconds of the second quarter, Bennett Goettsch completed a 2-yard run with Kain Eagle completing the point after as the Knights took an early 7-0 lead.
  • Minutes later, Moore found the endzone on a five-yard rush in a final play of a 10 play, 85-yard drive.
  • Moore added his second rushing touchdown with 4:50 remaining in the first half as the Knights jumped out to a 21-0 lead.
  • The Knights Max Solis forced a fumble from the Fighting Scots' Addison Fletcher and scored a safety.
  • With 21 seconds remaining in the first half, Moore completed a 25-yard rush for the Knights fourth touchdown of the half as the Knights shut out the Fighting Scots 30-0 in the opening half.
  • The Fighting Scots' Cody Szelc broke through the stalemate, scoring a field goal with 8:42 remaining in the third quarter.
  • Moore rushed for 23 yards with 3:20 remaining in the third quarter, scoring his fifth and final touchdown of the evening.
  • Nile McLaughlin completed a pass to Drake George for 36-yards for the final Knights touchdown as the Knights cruised to a 44-3 victory.
Key Players
  • Moore was 8-of-12 for passing attempts. Moore's longest attempt was 25 yards, throwing for a total of 114 yards. Moore had five rushes for 62 yards and three touchdowns.
  • Goettsch had 12 rushing attempts, totaling 43 yards.
  • Trent Roling was involved with six tackles for the Knights defense.
  • Eli Barrett recorded three solo tackles and two assist tackles, including one tackle-for-loss.
  • JoJo McNair had one receiving pass for 19 yards.
  • Ben Bryant led the Knights in punt return yards with five returns. Bryant totaled 98 yards on punts and had a single kickoff return for 21 yards. 
A Look at the Numbers
  • The Knights defense recorded 71 tackles, including eight tackles-for-loss. Riley Konrardy had one sack for 12 yards, while Colin Schrader recorded an interception.
  • The Knights tallied 14 receptions for 197 yards, with the longest reception being a 36-yard reception by George.
  • In rushing yards, the Knights recorded 217 yards on 40 attempts. The longest rushing attempt was by Austin Griffin at 27-yards.
  • Moore and McLaughlin teamed up in the quarterback position. The Knights at quarterback had 15 completions on 27 attempts for 220 passing yards.
