WAVERLY, Iowa – Wartburg men's soccer returned to Salzwedel Field Monday, Sept. 6 where they held off a late push by Macalester College to secure a 2-0 shutout victory.
The match started with back-and-forth strong defensive showings from both teams, until the 22
nd minute when
Jack Palen broke the scoreless tie with his second goal of the season. This goal marks back-to-back games with a goal for Palen.
The remaining first half stayed scoreless with the Knights holding a 1-0 advantage. Macalester was able to out-shoot the Knights 5-3 in the first half but could not convert any opportunities into goals.
The second half began with both teams playing aggressive. After almost 20 minutes into the second half, the Orange & Black were able to strike again. This time it was
Yushin Gossin who put a goal into the left side of the net from a beautiful assist from Lucas Mason. The goal is Gossin's first of the season and the second of his career.
The Scots would not go away quietly in the last 15 minutes. Macalester began to attack more aggressively with a 2-0 deficit, and this resulted in 5 second half corner kicks, but much like the first half the Scots were unable to convert their opportunities thanks to stingy defensive play by the Knights.
Wartburg was paced by Palen and Gossin offensively with two shots each. Goalkeeper
Brennon Woody made his season debut for the Knights, playing all 90 minutes and recording two saves in the shutout victory.
Next time on the pitch
The Orange & Black are back on the pitch Saturday, Sept. 11 when they travel to Northfield, MN. to take on Carleton College in a non-conference matchup.
