NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Wartburg men's soccer traveled to Northfield, Minn. Saturday, Sept. 11 and tied 1-1 with Carleton College after full time and two overtimes. Wartburg entered the contest with a 2-1 record and Carleton entered with a record of 2-0-1.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle that resulted in no goals despite Carleton having a 5-1 advantage in shots. Wartburg goalkeeper
Brennon Woody had two saves in the first half and would finish with four total saves. Both teams would go into the half with two corner kicks each.
After a scoreless first half, the tie was broken in the 58
th minute when a
Payton Chapman corner kick found the net after a
Michael Dunn header that would give the Wartburg Knights a 1-0 lead. The goal was Dunn's first of the season and the assist was Chapman's first of the season. The Carleton Knights would respond in the 67
th minute when Tonny Aton would score off a shot over the keeper to knot the score at one a piece.
Wartburg closed the gap in shots taken in the second half only trailing eight shots to five and the Knights led in corner kicks three to two. The Orange & Black attempted the only two shots of both overtime periods but were unable to convert any opportunities into shots.
Edvin Rizvic paced the Knights offensively with 3 shots and Woody would play the whole game in goal ending with four saves.
Next Time Out
The Knights are back in action Sunday, Sept. 12 at Salzwedel Field at 1 p.m. when they face North Central college.
