Knights Softball Sweeps St. Mary's (MN) to Start Season

CLERMONT, Fla.— The Wartburg College Knights softball started the season 2-0 after defeating the St. Mary's University of Minnesota Cardinals in a doubleheader.

The Knights shutout the Cardinals in game one, winning 14-0 and allowed only two hits by the Cardinals offense.

The Knights continued the offensive attack in game two, winning 10-2 as the Knights start the season strong.
 
Game One Recap
 
The Knights' Kaylie Springer put the Orange & Black on the board, scoring on a passed ball for the first run. The Knights exploded in the second inning, scoring nine runs. Sydney Illg hit the first home run of the season (2RBI) for her 16th career homer. Tarah Wehde reached base on an error and helped two Knights reach home. Lauren Frerichs singled to right fied (2 RBI) as the Knights took a 9-0 lead. Frerichs scored on Jordan Swiatkowski's single to second for a 10-0 lead to end the second inning. The Knights added four runs in the third inning as the Knights won the first game 14-0.
 
On the pitching mound for the Knights, Ashley Nelson got the start and allowed only one hit Carly Salutric took over to start the fourth, allowing one hit and striking out two batters.
 
Game Two Recap
 
Illg and Springer scored early for the Knights in game two as the Knights capitalized on an error by the Cardinals. The Knights allowed their first run of the second in the bottom of the first as the Cardinals doubled to center. After a scoreless second inning, the Knights recorded five hits on five runs in the third, taking a 7-1 lead.
 
The Cardinals added a second run in the bottom of the fourth, getting two hits. The Cardinals were credited three errors in the fifth, as the Knights scored three runs, taking a 10-2 lead.
 
Wehde took over pitching duties for the Knights in game two, allowing two runs, striking out two batters, and facing 16 batters.
 
Upcoming Games
 
The Knights continue action at the Spring Games with a pair of games slated against Rosemont College and Moravian University. The Knights and Rosemont face off at 8 am (CST) before taking on Moravian at 10:15 a.m. (CST). .
 
 
Series History
 
Wartburg and Rosemont will meet for the first time this week as the Knights and Moravian meet for the second time in program history (Wartburg leads 1-0).
