Knights Split Games on Day 2 and 3 of Spring Games Invite

CLERMONT, Fla.— Splitting games on the second and third days of the season, the Wartburg Knights softball squad moves to 4-2 on the season with wins over Chatham and Rosemont.

Rosemont 0, Wartburg 2

A defensive battle saw the Knights pitching retire the lineup in the first three innings.

Sydney Illg put the Knights on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Lauren Frerichs homered in the sixth inning, securing the Knights 2-0 win in the opening game on February 28.

Moravian 8, Wartburg 7 (10 Innings)

Moravian scored in the first inning before taking a 3-0 lead in the fourth on a home run. Tarah Wehde answered the home run in the top of the sixth as the Knights jumped on the board. Illg hit a sac bunt in the top of the seventh as Hannah Happ and Sydney Fellows tied the game up.

Extra innings were needed as the game would remain tied at three for the eighth and ninth inning. Olivia Brecht singled to center as Happ took the lead for the Orange & Black. Ella Link singled down the left field line (2 RBI) as Brecht and Kaylie Springer scored for the Knights. Link added the final run for the Knights as the Knights took a 7-3 lead heading into the bottom of the tenth. Moravian opened the at bat with a home run as the Greyhounds capitalized on errors by the Knights defense for the 8-7 win.

Chatham 2, Wartburg 14

After a double steal by Illg, the Knights start the game off hot scoring five runs in the first inning. Wehde scored her second homer of the week as the Knights jumped out 4-0. Jordan Swiatkowski tripled to left field in one of the final opening at bats for the Orange & Black, getting an RBI as Jenna Levine scored for the Knights.

Chatham got on the board in the bottom of the second on a single up the middle of the field. In her second at bat, Reegan Deputy doubled to right center as Fellows added a run for the Orange & Black. A single to left field would be the final run of the day for Chatham in the bottom of the third.

On three hits in the fourth inning, the Knights added six runs as the Chatham defense committed two errors in the inning. The Orange & Black had one hit in the fifth and final inning as the Knights added two runs for the victory.

Cabrini 6, Wartburg 0

The Knights sole hit of the game was a single by Springer in the bottom of the first. The Cavaliers of Cabrini took a 5-0 lead in the second inning as a double to center became a 3 RBI as all runners were able to score. The Knights were held without a run in the game as the Knights defense held the Cavaliers to a single run over the remaining innings.

The loss was the first shutout of the Knights since April 5, 2021 as Luther posted a 1-0 victory over the Knights on that date.

When the Knights return to action, they will face Adrian College and Eastern University on March 3.
