WAVERLY, Iowa – It was a night of firsts for Wartburg lacrosse on Tuesday, Mar. 15 as it hosted its first home night game in program history as well as secured the first win of the 2022 season. Wartburg's overtime thriller brought its overall and non-conference record to 1-5.
Game Summary
The first quarter of this back-and-forth contest was dominated by Wartburg, who closed the first period on a 3-0 run to take a 3-1 lead.
Britta Solheim netted her first goal of the season off an assist from
Olivia Christianson to get the offense started.
Ellie Johnson and
Bri Greiskalns followed that up with unassisted goals of their own.
Clarke answered in the second period with Emily Moran scoring four of Clarke's five second-period goals. Solheim scored again to keep the Knights afloat, but it was all Clarke in the second as they took a 6-4 lead into halftime.
Wartburg tied the game back up with 10:47 left in the third after two goals from Greiskalns, one was unassisted the other was assisted by Solheim. Greiskalns was far from over in the third as she assisted Christianson's first goal of the season and then scored two more of her own.
Kirsten Mahoney closed the third period with a goal to make the score 10-7 Wartburg heading into the fourth.
The Pride again responded with a big period offensively that saw Clarke score four unanswered goals to take a 11-10 lead with 5:29 remaining.
Ellie Johnson found the net for her first score of the game with just 4:02 left in regulation.
Neither team was able to pull away in the remaining minuetes of regulation and the game was sent to overtime. After a timeout late into the first overtime period,
Lindsay Langford scored the game-winning goal from Greiskalns' second assist to secure the first win of the season.
Alyson Hasner recorded nine saves and three groundballs in her first win at goalkeeper.
The Orange & Black finished the contest with a perfect 15/15 in clear attempts and held an edge in draw controls 17-10. Wartburg outshot Clarke 32-21 in total shots and 24-20 in shots on goal.
Game Leaders
Greiskalns led the offense with five goals and two assists for a total of seven points today. The junior picked up three groundballs and caused one turnover along with six other Knights.
Solheim scored her first two goals of the season and recorded one assist for a total of three points. She also led the team in groundballs today with six.
Johnson scored two goals for a total of two points and led the team with nine draw controls.
Next Time Out
Wartburg is in action next on Sunday, Mar. 20 with a 12 p.m. matchup at home against Marian University.
