Link Hits Three Homers Against Trine; Knights Split Action at Pioneer Classic

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY—Home runs were the story of the day as the Wartburg Knights Softball squad hit six home runs in the 7-6 victory over the Trine University Thunder.

Splitting the first day of action at the Pioneer Classic, the Knights fell 10-2 to DePauw University in the opening game of the day.

Olivia Brecht homered to center field, her second of the season, as the Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead.

Trine's Lexi Clark doubled to left field (2 RBI) as Trine jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the second.
 
Ella Link homered to left center field in the second inning before hitting a homer to right center in the fourth inning as the Knights jumped back on top. Jenna Levine doubled in the bottom of the fourth as Hannah Happ rounded the bases for the Knights.
 
Sydney Illg joined in on the home run action, leading off the fifth inning with a homer to center field.
 
The Knights defense held Trine to three hits over four innings.

Link wasn't done hitting homers, leading off the bottom of the sixth inning for the Knights with a home run to right center. Sydney Fellows joined the party, hitting a home run to left center field for the final run of the day for the Knights.
 
Trine made a late comeback in the seventh, scoring four runs on one hit. The Knights defense was on the ball, as Trine grounded out to third to end the game.
 
Madison Hiestand recorded seven strikeouts and ten groundouts after facing 35 batters in just over six innings. Carly Salutric grabbed the save on the mound, pitching the final out of the game.
 
 
DePauw Game Recap
 
Kaylie Springer led off the game with a single to left field before scoring the first run of the game on a wild pitch. The Tigers of DePauw tied the game up in the bottom of the first on a base hit to right field.
 
Hitting her second home run of the season, Lauren Frerichs put the Knights up 2-1 in the second inning.
 
The Tigers would score five runs off two hits with two errors in the second and third inning, taking a 6-2 lead over the Knights. Happ recorded a hit for the Knights in the fifth inning, stopping three consecutive strikeouts by the Orange & Black.
 
The Tigers of DePauw scored three runs off three hits in the fifth inning, handing the Knights their third consecutive loss of the season.
 
On the mound for the Knights, Ashley Nelson recorded three strikeouts as she faced 24 batters before Lauren Reicks entered the game for the Knights.
