Five Knights Record Hat-Trick in 21-7 Win

WAVERLY, Iowa – Wartburg lacrosse opened Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference play with a decisive 21-7 victory at home over Augsburg University on Wednesday, Apr. 13. This marked the first win over Augsburg in program history and moved the Knights to 3-8 overall and 1-0 in the MWLC.
 
Game Summary
Ellie Johnson scored the contest's first goal less than two minutes in to give the Knights an early 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, Maylynn Prokopec answered for the Auggies to the tie the score at one. Bri Greiskalns retook the lead for the Orange & Black less than 30 seconds later with her first goal of the day. Prokopec tied the game back up, but the Knights would score four more goals in the quarter after Beka Gershenoff scored twice, Lindsay Langford once, as well as Britta Solheim once to make it 6-3 after one period.
 
Greiskalns scored the first goal of the second quarter after Mallory Thys found her with an assist. The fifth-year midfielder/attacker would score again a little over five minutes later to secure the early hat-trick.

It was all Wartburg to end the first half as the Knights finished on a 5-0 run after giving up one goal in the quarter. Ellie Johnson scored her second goal of the game during this run and Solheim also secured a first-half hat trick. The Orange & Black took a 12-4 lead into the half.
 
The Knights dominated the third period with six goals scored and none allowed. The first goal of the second half came from Thys, which is her first career goal for Wartburg. Langford and Johnson both scored their third goal in the third quarter for the Knights' third and fourth hat-trick of the game.
 
In the fourth quarter, Gershenoff completed her hat-trick after a goal with 9:19 left to play. Olivia Christianson closed the game with a goal to mark just her second of the season and secure a 21-7 victory for the Orange & Black.
 
Game Leaders
Greiskalns finished the contest with eight total points after five goals and three assists. The fifth-year leader had a great all-around performance as she recorded 12 draw controls, seven groundballs, and four caused turnovers, which were all team-highs.
 
Alyson Hasner earned the win at goalie and recorded four saves through 45 minutes played. Brittney Shipman played the fourth quarter in relief of Hasner and recorded two saves.
 
Solheim had a career scoring day with her career-high in goals with five and total points with six. The sophomore now has 15 goals on the season and 4 assists for a total of 19 points.
 
Gerhenoff scored her first three goals of her career today and recorded an assist for a total of four points.
 
The Knights' six assists mark a season high as a team this season. The Orange & Black had five athletes record a hat-trick today as well as two athletes scoring their first career goals.
 
Next Time Out
Wartburg will continue MWLC play on Monday, Apr. 18 against Lake Forest College on the road.
