Illg Moves Up the Record Book as Knights Softball Splits Series with NWU

LINCOLN, Neb.—­­­Sydney Illg moved into the No. 2 spot in the career-stolen bases list for the Wartburg Knights Softball squad as the Knights split an American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) doubleheader against the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves.

Illg has taken the No. 2 spot in the career-stolen bases list, sitting at 78 stolen bases.
 
The Knights came from behind in the second game, winning 7-5 in eight innings. The Knights dropped the opening game of the series 8-4 to the Prairie Wolves.

The Prairie Wolves took an early 4-0 lead in the second game, recording four runs off eight hits.
 
The Knights found their offensive rhythm in the sixth inning, as Ella Link singled up on the third at bat for the Knights. Olivia Brecht stole home as the Orange & Black brough the game within one at 4-3.
 
Madison Heistand held the Prairie Wolves to zero hits in the bottom of the sixth as the momentum shifted in favor of the Knights.
 
Link doubled to right field and would advance to third on the throw from the defense as Brecht tied the game at four. Link put the Knights in the lead as Lauren Frerichs hit a sac fly to left field.

The Prairie Wolves tied the game up at five in the bottom of the seventh as additional innings would be needed to determine a winner.

Kaylie Springer hit a single RBI to left filed as Hannah Happ rounded the bases for the Knights, taking a 6-5 lead. Springer stole home for the final run of the game as Illg grounded out to the shortstop.

The Prairie Wolves threatened in the eighth, placing runners on first and second. The Knights allowed two hits in the final inning, claiming their second A-R-C win.

After reaching on a walk, Illg scored the first run of the game for the Knights on Brecht's single RBI to center field.
 
The Prairie Wolves tied the game in the bottom of the first and took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the third on two hits. The Prairie Wolves' Kailey Meyer retired the Knights in the third and fourth innings, while the Prairie Wolves built their lead to six (7-1).
 
Hitting her fifth home run of the season, Link homered to left field, bringing home Brecht and Illg for three runs.
 
The Prairie Wolves added their final run of the game in the sixth inning, on one hit as the Knights' Springer singled in the seventh.
 
Moving in the Record Book
 
With her 19 runs scored this season, Illg has moved to No. 4 in the record book for career runs. Illg is 21 runs away from tying the record and needs 24 runs to pass Ashley Rogers (143 runs).
 
Illg, who has recorded two triples this season, is three away from cracking the Top-10 in the career record. Illg leads the record book for most hit-by-pitch has added to her record (34) as Frerichs is tied for fifth with eleven HBP.

Returning to Action

The Knights are set to host Luther in a midweek battle on April 5. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in an A-R-C doubleheader at Lynes Field.
