Six Home Runs Leads Knights Softball To Sweep over Storm

Brecht Records Two Homers in Game One

WAVERLY, Iowa— With six home runs on the day, including two by Olivia Brecht, the Wartburg College Knights swept Simpson College in an American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) doubleheader.

The Knights (22-10, 9-5 A-R-C) posted a game one score of 11-2 as Sydney Illg hit a two-run home run walk-off to seal the victory.
 
The Knights had a big second inning in game two as the Knights won 12-4 over the Simpson Storm (19-16, 4-10 A-R-C).
 
Game One Recap
 
Brecht and Ella Link hit back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the first as the Knights took an early 2-0 lead.
 
The Storm's Karlie Hill answered with a homer in the second as Maxie Saceda-Hurt hit the second homer for the Storm in the third.

In the second, the Storm walked two of the first four batters for the Knights. Kaylie Springer (2-of-3) hit an RBI single as Jenna Levine scored for the Knights. Sydney Illg (1-of-2) hit a sac fly for Sydney Fellows to score the fourth run of the game. Brecht (2-of-2) hit a three-run homer for her second as the Knights took a 7-4 lead at the end of the second.
 
Ashley Nelson retired the Storm batters in the fourth and fifth innings as Link hit a 2 RBI single in the bottom of the fourth for the Knights.
 
Illg hit the walk-off home run in the bottom of the sixth as the second Knights batter in the inning. The Storm's pitcher faced two batters in the sixth.
 
Game Two Recap
 
Maddie Hiestand started in the pitchers circle for the Knights in game two, allowing one hit and three strikeouts in the first inning.
 
Springer scored the first run of the game for the Knights on a wild pitch as Hiestand retired the batters in the second.
 
Offense exploded for the Knights in the bottom of the second, scoring seven runs off five hits. Tarah Wehde (1-of-3) hit a two-run home run as the second batter for the Knights. A pair of single hits from Illg and Brecht brought home runs for the Knights. Brecht scored on an error as Link stole second base. Lauren Frerichs (2-of-3) hits a two-run home run to right center field as the Knights took an 8-0 lead.
 
The Storm got their first run on the board a single RBI to center field as the Knights allowed two hits in the third. The Storm held the Knights two hits in the third inning as they added two runs off two hits in the fourth.
 
In the fourth, Frerichs hit a triple RBI as Link scored. Following a pitching change, Frerichs scored off Levine's single to right center.
 
The Knights defense allowed one run off three hits in the top of the fifth.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, Hannah Happ and Springer hit back-to-back bunts for the first two Knights at bat. A double steal saw Happ steal home for the eleventh run of the game. Illg hit a sac fly out to center field, bringing Springer home for the final run of the game.
 
Eyes on the Record Book
 
The Knights have broken or put records on the watch list in 31 statistical categories.
 
Illg enters her name in seven categories with moves in the top-10 and is on the edge of two additional categories. Illg adds to her top spot in career hit-by-pitch (36), stolen bases (No. 2 at 83), runs scored (No. 4 at 133), home runs (tie-No. 4 at 22), double plays turned (No. 6 at 23), RBIs (No. 7 at 96), and total bases (No. 9 at 227).
 
Brecht jumps into the record book, tying at No. 9 for career-doubles (28). Brecht sits at No. 8 in stolen bases (40) and is seventh in double-plays turned (21).
 
Lauren Frerichs sits at No. 5 in hit-by-pitch (12) while Springer enters the top-10 in stolen bases (42).
 
Jordan Swiatkowski jumps to No. 3 in most caught stealing with 20.  
 
In season only records, Link jumps into a tie for the top-10 in RBI at 40.

Next Time on the Field

The Knights conclude non-conference action as they travel to St. Catherine's University on April 27 for a doubleheader. The Knights and St. Kate's are set for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
