Hot Offense Leads Knights to Sweep of Wildcats; Sets Single Season Record

ST. PAUL, Minn—Breaking a single season record and sweeping their second straight opponent, the Wartburg Knights Softball (24-10) swept St. Catherine's University Wildcats (18-14) this afternoon.
 
The Knights posted a 9-1 win in game one, allowing only one hit on the day. The Knights took game two 18-6, extending their win streak to four.

After having four batters hit by the pitch, the Knights have set a new record at 37 (previous record of 34 was set in 2021).
 
Game One Recap
 
The Knights offense started firing on all cylinders in the third inning, scoring six runs off six hits. Hannah Happ (1-of-3) pushed the first run across after leading off the inning with a single. Kaylie Springer scored on Ella Link's RBI single. A 2 RBI single by Tarah Wehde (1-of-3) brought home Link (2-of-4) and Olivia Brecht (2-of-4). Wehde and Lauren Frerichs  (1-of-2) scored to end the inning as the Knights took a 6-0 lead.
 
The Wildcats of St. Catherine's scored their only run in the bottom of the third before recording their only hit of the game in the fourth.
 
Frerichs stole a pair of bases in the fifth before scoring the seventh run of the day for the Knights. Springer and Sydney Illg added the final two runs of the day in the sixth, with the Knights recording two hits in the inning.
 
Game Two Recap
 
Hot offense continued in game two as the Knights scored three runs off five hits in the first inning. The Knights continued hot hitting, scoring six runs off four hits for a 9-0 lead entering the bottom of the second.
 
Defensively, the Knights were clicking in game two retiring the first three Wildcat batters before ending the second on a double play.
 
The Wildcats added three runs on three hits in the third, trimming the Knights lead to seven (10-3).
 
Jordan Swiatkowski (4-of-5) hit a home run in the fourth, the first of the day for the Knights. Leading off the sixth inning, Swiatkowski hit her second home run. The Knights kept the offensive pressure up as Frerichs (4-of-5) tripled late in the inning. Wehde (3-of-4) and Jenna Levine (2-of-4) hit back-to-back home runs, taking an 18-5 lead over the Wildcats.
 
The Wildcats led off the sixth inning with a home run for the final run of the day.

Next Time Out
 
The Knights return home for Senior Day on April 30 as they host Buena Vista in the final regular season games of the year.
