Lacrosse Clinches First Postseason Berth in Program History

WAVERLY, Iowa – Women's lacrosse defeated Cornell College 7-5 in Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference on Wednesday, Apr. 27 to clinch its first postseason appearance in program history. The Orange & Black will compete in the MWLC Tournament for the first time on Wednesday, May. 4.
 
Game Summary
The Knights found the net early with goals from Britta Solheim and Beka Gershenoff less than four minutes into the first period. The first goal from Solheim was assisted by Ellie Johnson for her first assist of the season.
 
Nina Deer responded with an unassisted goal almost midway through the quarter to make the score 2-1 after one quarter of play.
 
The beginning of the next period belonged to Bri Greiskalns and Solheim. The first goal of the second quarter came after Greiskalns found Solhiem in front of the net. Greiskalns scored the next goal unassisted and then found Solheim again for the second time this period to make the score 5-1 in the second. Deer again answered for the Rams and the score was 5-2 heading to halftime.
 
Cornell came out of the break fired up offensively and scored three unanswered goals in the first five minutes of the third quarter. After a stretch of stops from both sides, Greiskalns broke the tie after Gershenoff found her with the assist.
 
Both defenses played tough in the fourth quarter and only one goal was allowed the whole quarter. The final goal came with just over seven minutes left, when Greiskalns assisted a third Solheim goal of the contest. The Orange & Black held on to win 7-5 and are now 4-10 overall and 2-2 in MWLC play.
 
Game Leaders
Solheim was one goal shy of tying her career high today with four goals scored. The sophomore also picked up one ground ball and caused one turnover for the Knights.
 
Greiskalns finished with three assists for the third time this season today and brought her season total to 12. The fifth-year leader put two goals in today to move to 40 goals this season and 52 total points. Greiskalns also led the team in ground balls and caused turnovers with six and five respectively.
 
Alyson Hasner started and played all 60 minutes in goal today and earned her fourth career win. The freshman goalie recorded eight saves today, while allowing only five.
 
Next Time Out
The Knights are at home again on Saturday, Apr. 30 to wrap up the regular season against Hamline University at 3 p.m.
