DECATUR, Ill.—The No. 25 Wartburg College Knights Softball squad (30-13) took a steady lead down the stretch as the Millikin University Big Blue (36-7) had a comeback in the sixth to claim game one of the NCAA Division III Super Regional, 9-5.
The Big Blue pushed three runs across in the bottom of the first as Kendallyn Davison got things started with a passed ball. The Big Blue pushed Lanie Chizmark and Grace Biondo across, taking a 3-0 lead over the Knights.
Jenna Levine (2-of-2) led off the second inning with a double to right field and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Hannah Happ (0-of-1) hit a sac fly out to center field as Levine crossed the plate for the Knights.
Starting off in the pitchers' circle,
Ashley Nelson retired the Big Blue in the second inning.
Olivia Brecht (2-of-3) reached base after hitting a single to center field and scored of
Ella Link's (1-of-4) double RBI to left field.
Lauren Frerichs reached on an error by the first baseman and stole second, her 30th stolen base this season. Levine hit a ground-rule 2 RBI double for Frerichs and Link take a 4-3 lead for the Knights.
The Knights quickly got the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth. Happ scored on Brecht's walk to end the inning, with the Knights leading 5-3.
The Big Blue took the lead on a 3 RBI double by Chizmark before hitting a two-run homerun to seal the victory over the Knights.
Next Game
Game two of the series is set for 11 a.m. on May 21, with the if necessary game three to follow. Action will take place at the Workman Family Softball Field on Millikin's campus.
