Men's Basketball Fall 80-79 After Late Basket from Nebraska Wesleyan

LINCOLN, Neb. – Wartburg men's basketball fell to Nebraska Wesleyan in the final seconds in a 80-79 loss on the road Saturday, Jan. 7. The Knights are now 5-9 overall and move to 2-3 in American Rivers Conference play.
 
Scoring Summary
  • First Half
    • Nebraska Wesleyan University scored the first five points
    • The Knights brought cut the Prairie Wolves lead to 10-9 with 16:21 left in the half after six points from Codey Hicks
    • Wartburg took its first lead of the game when a Marshun Williams three-point play made the score 17-16
    • The Knights led 25-21 with just over 10 minutes to play in the first half after three pointers from Jack Molstead and Cade Daugherty
    • After it being tied 33-33, Wartburg pulled out to a 38-33 lead with 3:12 left in the half after a Rich Rosenblum three
    • After back and forth scoring and multiple lead changes the Knights went into the half trailing 44-41
  • Second Half
    • Keagan John scored the first points of the second half with a jump shot, but NWU responded with a three to push the lead back to four
    • Hicks scored the next four points to tie the game at 47, but another three from the Prairie Wolves put them back on top with 15:56 to play
    • Wartburg retook the lead after Molstead connected with three three pointers to put the Orange & Black up 57-52 with under 13 minutes to play
    • NWU rallied to tie the game at 59 before John broke the tie with a corner three
    • The Prairie Wolves answered with eight straight and retook the lead with less then five minutes to play
    • NWU connected on another three with just under two minutes to play to put them up by seven but John answered with a three of his own
    • Trailing 76-70, Molstead connected from deep to pull Wartburg within three with 28 seconds to play
    • Two NWU free throws but them back up by five, but Wartburg continued to fight and answered with a John three pointer to make it 78-76, NWU, with under 20 seconds left
    • After a turnover, Wartburg took the lead after a Molstead three but the Prairie Wolves got to the basket for a game winning layup with a second left to secure a 80-79 win
