WAVERLY, Iowa – Wartburg men's basketball will begin the 2023-24 season at home against Macalester College on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m.
Last Season
The Knights closed the 2022-23 season with an overall record of 11-15 and an American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) mark of 8-8. Wartburg made the A-R-C Tournament, but fell in the first round to Loras. The Orange and Black had three all-conference honorees and one honorable mention a season ago.
Season Outlook
Wartburg will have a lot of new faces in 2023-24 as it returns just one starter and 11 total players from last season's roster.
Marshun Williams is the lone starter returning, while
Richie Rosenblum and
Trent Allard both provided solid minutes off the bench a season ago.
"Those guys have all been tremendous leaders in the weight room, pickup games and practices" head coach
Dick Peth said about his returning upperclassman.
The Knights have added 11 first year student-athletes to the roster as well as one transfer.
Carter Cuvelier is returning to the court for Wartburg after missing the previous two seasons with injury.
"It's exciting to see what some of these first-year student athletes are doing," said Peth. "We are going to have some play for us this year, they are that talented. Who they are and how many minutes is still yet to be determined."
The Knights will start the season with a five-game homestand, including the annual Buzz Levick Tournament and an A-R-C opener against Luther. Coach Peth understands the benefit of home games early with a young team, "We're able to play at home, which will be better for some of our newer and young players."
Early in the season Peth will look for how the young players compliment the returning core both offensively and defensively. "With most of our bigs being returners, we will be looking at what those younger guys can do from the perimeter. A big challenge for us will be adjusting to the level of physicality and intensity of the defense needed."
Head coach
Dick Peth enters his 27
th season at the helm of Wartburg men's basketball and is the second-most winningest coach in Division III with 619 wins (398 at Wartburg).
