DAVENPORT, Fla. – Wartburg baseball continued play at the RussMatt Invitational on Monday, Feb. 27 with a split doubleheader against Calvin University. Wartburg fell 9-2 in the first game and then a
Sam Nicolino walk-off double lifted the Knights over Calvin 4-3 in game two.
Game Summary
- Game One
- Calvin got ahead early, knocking in a run in the bottom of the first inning after a single
- In the bottom of the second inning, Calvin scored a run from a groundout and then four straight hits, including two doubles, brought in three more runs to make the score 5-0 after two innings
- Wartburg got its first hit in the fourth when Sam Nicolino singled to through the left side
- The Knights got runners on in the top of the sixth after Zach Walton walked and then Zach Wesolowski hit a ground-rule double that led to an Eliot Jurgensen sacrifice fly to make the score 5-1
- Calvin scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth, including three unearned runs
- Will Armstrong singled in the seventh and was batted in by a Caleb Andrews sacrifice fly, but Calvin held on to win 9-2
- Game Two
- This time it was the Knights who scored in the first inning after singles from Walton and Wesolowski set up an RBI single for Nicolino to put Wartburg up 1-0
- Calvin scored two in the top of the third after a walked in run and sacrifice fly
- Calvin added another run in the fifth after two singles and led 3-1, but in the bottom half Nicolino brought home Walton with a single to cut the lead to one after five innings
- Wartburg's pitching and defense held strong and the score remained 3-2 Calvin heading to the bottom of the seventh
- Walton started the inning reaching base and then was scored by a Wesolowski single to tie the game at 3 before Nicolino hit another RBI, this time a double, to bring home the winning run
- Aaron Eybers earned the win on the mound after facing the last five batters of the game
