Knights split with Duhawks in home finale

WAVERLY, Iowa-- The Wartburg softball team (16-14 overall, 6-4 American Rivers) split with Loras (17-12, 5-5) Tuesday in the home finale. The Duhawks won the opener 4-0, but the Knights won the nightcap 8-0 in six innings.

Game One:
  • Loras capitalized on a throwing error to take the early 1-0 lead.
  • The Knights broke up the no-hitter in the fourth on Sydney Fellow's single to right field.
  • The Duhawks used a three-run homer in the sixth to extend the lead to 4-0.
  • The Orange and Black were able to advance a baserunner to third in the bottom of the frame with two outs, but the next batter grounded out to strand her
  • Fellows went 2-3
 
Game two
  • The game was scoreless until the third inning as Fellows drove in Sydney Illg on her sac fly to center
  • Lauren Frerichs later hit a three-run homer to make it 4-0
  • Loras broke up the no-hitter in the fourth on three singles, but was unable to score
  • Tarah Wehde hit a solo home run in the fourth to extend the margin to five
  • In the fifth, Kaylie Springer scored on Frerich's RBI groundout and Fellows scored on Ella Link's single to left for the 7-0 lead
  • In the sixth, Wehde reached on a fielding error. Ally Happ came in as her pinch runner, moved to second on Illg's bunt, stole third and then scored the game-winning run on a fielding error to seal the run rule victory
  • Avery Mull went the distance and fanned two
  • Illg was 3-3 with two stolen bases
  • Springer was 2-3 with two runs and a stolen base
Next event
The Knights open a six-game road trip Saturday when they travel to face Buena Vista at 1 p.m.
