Baseball Falls in Both Games to BVU in Doubleheader

WAVERLY, Iowa – Baseball closed its three-game series against Buena Vista University on Saturday, Apr. 8 with a 5-4 game one loss and then a 13-3 loss in game two in eight innings. The Knights are now 8-12 overall and move to 3-8 in American Rivers Conference play.
 
Game Summary
  • Game One
    • After a 1-2-3 top of the first, Keaton Gray doubled to leadoff the for the Knights and was eventually scored by Zach Walton to take an early 1-0 lead after one inning
    • BVU answered in the top of the second inning with three straight hits, including a double, to take a 2-1 lead after two innings
    • Caleb Andrews led the third inning off with a walk and then Zach Wesolowski crushed a home run to right-center field to put the Knights back on top 3-2 after three innings
    • Will Armstrong led the fourth inning off with a triple, but the Knights left three runners stranded as BVU got out of the jam with no runs given up
    • Neither team was able to put up any runs in the fifth, sixth, or seventh inning and the score remained 3-2 Wartburg heading to the eighth inning
      • Wartburg's last hit came in the fourth inning and BVU's came in the fifth
    • The Beavers got the eighth inning started with three hits, including an RBI single and RBI triple that put BVU up 4-3
    • The Knights answered with a leadoff double from Wesolowski and then Carter Stubitz singled to bring the tying run across for Wartburg
    • In the top of the ninth the Beavers led off with a pinch hit solo homerun to take a 5-4 lead heading to the final frame
    • BVU held off the Knights for a 5-4 game one win
  • Game Two
    • After a scoreless first inning, BVU got on the board in the second with a four hit inning that scored two runs
    • The Beavers added another two runs with a two out RBI triple and double to left-center field to take a 4-0 lead after three innings
    • Walton put the Knights on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot to right-center field to make the score 4-1
    • Both Armstrong and Gray got into scoring position early in the fifth inning and Armstrong was scored by an Andrews groundout and Gray was brought in by a Walton single that cut the Beaver lead to 4-3 after five innings
    • Starting pitcher Nick Nin strung together three consecutive scoreless innings to keep the Beavers at four runs heading to the seventh inning
    • BVU opened the game up in the top of the seventh with an eight-run inning that put the Beavers up 12-3 after the top of the seventh inning
    • BVU added another run in the eighth to go up 13-3 an the Beavers held off Wartburg in the bottom half to secure the win in eight innings
