Illg becomes career leader in stolen bases in sweep over Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa— Sydney Illg became Wartburg's career leader in stolen bases in Wednesday's sweep over Simpson. She recorded her 115th swiped bag in the first inning of the second game. Illg broke Liz Roby-Miklus' mark of 114 set from 2016-19.

The Knights won the first game 5-0 and claimed the finale 9-8.

Game One
  • The game was scoreless until Reegan Deputy hit a two-run home run in the third
  • Sydney Fellows hit a three-run double down the left field line in the fifth for the final runs of the first game
  • Illg went 3-4
  • Ashley Nelson went the distance and struck out five
Game Two
  • The Knights took the 2-0 lead in the first
  • Simpson knotted the game in the third on a two-run homer
  • Frerichs slugged a two-run homer over the centerfield fence to reclaim the lead
  • In the next frame, Frerichs hit a grand slam over the right field fence for the 8-2 lead
  • This was the first grand slam since Illg hit one against Huntingdon on Feb. 27, 2021
  • The Storm plated three in the fifth and one in the sixth to make it 9-6
  • Frerichs also tied the school record with her two home runs in the contest
  • Ally Happ scored the final run of the game as she scored on Illg's single to center
  • Simpson sliced the margin to one in the seventh on a two-run double with two outs.
  • The next batter hit into a fielder's choice to end the rally
  • Illg, Frerichs and Hannah Happ all went 2-4
  • Frerichs added six RBIs, just one shy of the single game school record
