INDIANOLA, Iowa – Men's basketball fell to Simpson College 106-98 in overtime on Saturday, Jan. 27. The Knights are now 3-17 overall and 2-9 in American Rivers Conference play.
Game Summary
- First Half
- Marshun Williams scored the first six points for the Knights to make the score 6-4 after four minutes of play
- Gabe Trujillo scored two from the free throw line and then Garrett Hempen added a three pointer that put Wartburg ahead 11-6 minutes later
- Simpson answered with an 11-0 run to take a 17-11 lead with just over 12 minutes left in the half
- Ethan Yungtum and Luke Ladwig both scored to interrupt the Storm's scoring run, but Simpson led 27-15 with nine minutes remaining
- Minutes later, Williams and Isaac Besh both connected from behind the arc to cut the Simpson lead to nine
- The lead got to as low as six after a Hempen three and again after a Yungtum three-point play
- Simpson was able to stretch the lead to double digits before halftime
- Storm led 49-38 at halftime
- Second Half
- Wartburg came out of the break with a 10-3 run led by a layup from Williams and three pointers from Trujillo and Besh
- Besh was fouled on his made three and he converted the four point play
- Simpson responded with a 5-0 run to put the Storm back ahead by 10 points
- Wartburg continued to cut into the lead and Simpson led 64-61 with 12:36 remaining
- Knights run led by five points from Ladwig
- Yungtum scored four straight points at the line and then a Carter Cuvelier layup cut the lead to 73-70 with 7:52 left to play
- Williams scored four straight points to tie the game at 78 with just over four minutes left
- After six straight from Williams Wartburg led 84-78 with 2:22 left, but Simpson came back to tie the game at 87-87 with under 30 seconds to play
- Neither team scored and the game headed to overtime
- Overtime
- Both teams traded baskets to begin overtime as Williams and Trujillo both scored
- Besh made a layup to tie the game at 93, but Simpson scored the next seven points to take a 100-93 lead with 30 seconds left
- Ladwig and Besh both scored in the final seconds, but Simpson held on for a 106-98 win
