Storm Hold Off Knights 1-0

WAVERLY, Iowa – Women's soccer battled Simpson College and fell 1-0 on Saturday, Oct. 24 at home. The loss brings Wartburg to 4-2-1 in American Rivers Conference play and 8-6-3 overall.
 
Match Summary
  • First Half
    • Simpson recorded the first shot on goal of the match in the seventh minute that was saved by Mackenzie Ceschan
    • The Knights defense stifled Simpson on back-to-back corner kick attempts in the 16th minute and then Ceschan made another save a minute later
    • Nikayla Youngblut got space in the 20th minute and fired Wartburg's first shot on goal of the match that was saved by Simpson
    • Wartburg made two team saves over the next 10 minutes of play, but in the 39th minute Maddie Hays converted a penalty kick for Simpson to make it 1-0
    • Ceschan added another save before halftime and Simpson led 1-0 headed into the break
  • Second Half
    • The Storm continued to fire shots to begin the second half and Ceschan made another save in the 56th minute
    • In the 62nd minute, a handball led to a Wartburg penalty kick
      • Lauren Kirkle's penalty shot deflected off the crossbar and bounced away where it eventually made it way to Claudia Sewell, who fired a shot on goal that was saved by Simpson
    • Kirkle fired a deep shot on goal in the 65th minute that was saved by the Simpson keeper
    • Neither team was able to record another shot on goal and Simpson was able to hold off Wartburg for a 1-0 win
