Men's Basketball Fall to Cornell 98-94 in Overtime

WAVERLY, Iowa – Cornell College outlasted men's basketball 98-94 in overtime in the Buzz Levick Tournament championship on Saturday, Nov. 16. Marshun Williams led all scorers with 34 points and Ethan Yungtum recorded a double double for the Knights.

Game Summary
  • First Half
    • An Isaac Besh three pointer and a layup from Gabe Trujillo gave Wartburg a 5-2 lead two minutes into the game
    • Marshun Williams stopped a Cornell run with a three pointer to retake the lead for Wartburg 8-6
      • Cornell made a 9-0 run following the three to make it 15-8 Rams with just under 14 minutes left in the half
    • Richie Rosenblum, Luke Ladwig and Williams all scored in the paint to cut into the Cornell lead before an Ethan Yungtum three-point play cut the lead to two points
    • The Rams took a 24-19 lead, but Williams caught fire from beyond the arc and made three-straight three pointers to put Wartburg back in front 28-26 with 5:27 left in the first
    • Rosenblum kept the momentum on Wartburg's side with a three pointer that kept Wartbug in front by six, but Cornell closed the gap and only trailed by four at the break
  • Second Half
    • Rosenblum started the second half with another three pointer and Williams had six early points in the half to keep Wartburg in front 49-46 four minutes into the second half
    • Rosenblum made two more threes to keep the Knights in front, but Cornell kept answering Wartburg's runs and eventually tied the game at 60-60 with just under 10 to play
    • Dominic Braet scored six-straight points at the line for Wartburg after stealing the inbounds pass after making two free throws
    • Yungtum scored four straight points and then Williams made a deep two before the shot clock buzzer to keep Wartburg in front 74-69 with 5:45 left to play
    • The Knights were unable to extend its lead past two possessions and the Rams were able to keep making timely baskets to stay in the game
      • With under a minute, Besh gave the Knights the lead at the free throw line, but Cornell tied it up at the free throw line to force overtime
  • Overtime
    • Williams scored first for the Knights in OT to tie the game back up at 84-84, but back-to-back Cornell three balls gave the Rams a 92-86 lead
    • Despite three pointers from Williams and Yungtum, Cornell held off the Knights for a 98-94 win
