Softball swept by No. 3 Berry

MOUNT BERRY, Ga.-- The Wartburg softball team fell in its season opener to No. 3 Berry (10-0) Monday. The Vikings won 13-6 and 3-2.

Game one:
  • Jenna Wiebenga had a solo home run in the first to take the 1-0 lead.
  • Berry tallied eight in the bottom of the frame, thanks in part to a grand slam
  • The Knights answered with three in the second to make it 8-4
  • The Vikings plated three in the fourth to make it 11-4
  • Ella Link added two for the Orange and Black in the fifth on her two-run homer
  • Berry scored one in the fifth and sixth to make the final scores 13-6
  • Wiebenga: 4-4, 3 RBI, HR
  • Kaylie Springer: 2-4, 1 RBI
  • Link: 1-4, 2-run homer
 
Game two
  • A similar story rang true in the finale as Wartburg took the 2-0 lead in the second as Tarah Wehde drove in Link and Sydney Fellows
  • The Knights looked to add to their lead in the fourth as they had runners on the corners with two outs. Unfortunately, the next batter struck out to end the threat
  • The Vikings scored the go-ahead run in the sixth on an error and a two-run single
  • In the seventh, Lainie Bouillon reached on a single with one out, but was unfortunately left stranded as the next two batters were retired to seal the sweep for Berry
  • Fellows: 2-3, 1 run
  • Wehde: 1-2, 2 RBI
  • Avery Mull: CG, 4 Ks

  • First career home run for Wiebenga
  • Link's 27th career home run. She is now tied for third with Sydney Illg on the career leader list
