Two Early Goals Propel Women's Soccer Past UW-Eau Claire 2-1

WAVERLY, Iowa – Women's soccer scored two early goals to propel the Knights to a 2-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. The win moves Wartburg to 4-4-1 overall while it moves UW-Eau Claire to 4-5-1 overall.
 
Match Summary
  • First Half
    • The Knights wasted no time getting on the scoreboard after a corner kick from Lauren Kirkle in the 4th minute found its way to Greta Rothe, who finished to put Wartburg up 1-0
    • Just over three minutes later, Claudia Sewell found Nikayla Youngblut slashing thorough the defense and then beat the keeper to make it 2-0 seven minutes into the match
    • UW-Eau Claire responded in the 13th minute with its first shot on goal but it was saved by Alena Miller in goal
    • Kirkle kept the pressure on the Blugolds' defense with multiple shots, including one on goal in the 24th minute
    • Sami Webster had a shot on goal saved for the Knights and the score remained 2-0 at halftime
  • Second Half
    • A Kirkle shot that was saved led to another early corner kick, but this time the Knights' shot was just wide of the target
    • Miller made another save in the 57th minute to keep the match at 2-0
    • The Blugolds were awarded a penalty shot in the 65th minute that was scored to cut Wartburg's lead to 2-1
    • Ellianna Trilling and Paige Lienhard both had shot attempts late in the match for Wartburg
    • The Knights held off the Blugolds for a 2-1 home victory
