WAVERLY, Iowa – Men's basketball (9-5, 2-3 A-R-C) was defeated by the University of Dubuque (9-4, 3-1 A-R-C) 79-60 in American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play on Wednesday, Jan. 8.
Game Summary
- First Half
- Marshun Wiliams scored Wartburg's first basket of the game to tie the game at 2-2, but Dubuque scored the next five points to take an early 7-2 lead
- The Knights took their first lead of the game after a 6-0 run from Ethan Yungtum, who made a three and then converted a three-point play on a tip-in
- Yungtum scored again to give him eight points in the first five minutes as Wartburg led 11-10
- UD went on another 7-2 run, but Isaac Besh responded with a three pointer followed by a pull-up jumper from Brewer Eiklenborg that put the Knights ahead 18-17 with 10:39 left in the half
- After a 9-2 Spartan run gave UD a 26-20 lead, Williams made a layup with the foul and then minutes later Luke Ladwig found Besh for three to tie the game at 26-26 with 6:27 left in the half
- The Spartans ended the half on a 12-0 run to put them ahead 38-26 after five Wartburg turnovers in the final six minutes
- Second Half
- After a UD basket began the second half, Yungtum and Williams combined for 10 points during a 10-2 Wartburg run
- The Knights cut Dubuque's lead to eight points with 15:46 left in the game
- Rosenblum connected on a three pointer and Austin Bienemann got beind the defense for a two-handed dunk, but the Knights still trailed 48-41
- Ladwig assisted both plays
- A 13-4 Spartan run pushed UD's lead to 61-45 with 11:14 remaining
- Rosenblum, Bienemann and Drew Britson all scored for the Knights, but the Spartans' lead grew to as many as 24 points
- Britson and Rosenblum both made three pointers in the final minutes for the Knights, but UD came away with a 79-60 win
