Knights Split Doubleheader Against St. Olaf Following a Walkoff Win in Game Two

WAVERLY, Iowa - Wartburg baseball split a home doubleheader against St. Olaf College  The Oles took game one 8-4 and the Knights took game two 4-3. The Knights record improved to 6-5, while the Oles dropped to 5-3. 
 
Game 1 Summary 
  • 1st Inning 
    • The Oles loaded the bases with two outs after singles from Breckin Hadley and Christopher Woodside and a walk from Frank Lavin. The Knights were able to get out of the jam when Joey Ciero struck out Matthew Oberlander. 
    • The Knights struck first on an RBI groundout from Zach Walton after a Will Armstrong leadoff triple. 
  • 3rd Inning 
    • The Oles tied the game up on an RBI single from Frank Lavin. 
  • 4th Inning 
    • The Oles took their first lead of the game on an RBI single from Breckin Hadley following Matthew Kulesa reaching on an error and Cole Pleimann singling. They extended their lead on a 2 RBI single from Christopher Woodside. 
    • The Knights were able to get one back in the bottom half of the inning when Eliot Jurgensen scored on a wild pitch. 
  • 5th Inning
    • Eliot Jurgensen's RBI single capped off three straight two-out singles for the Knights and brought them back within one. The Oles were able to get Zach Walton to ground out to second to get out of the inning. 
  • 6th Inning
    • The Oles regained their two run lead when Matthew Kulesa scored on a wild pitch from Hunter Sehr
    • The Knights got that run back on a sacrifice fly from Gehrig Turner that scored Keegan Schmitt, who led off the inning with a double. 
  • 7th Inning 
    • The Oles continued the back and forth affair when Evan Hammond scored on a throwing error from Liam Bender. They added some insurance with a 2 RBI triple from Cole Pleimann.

Game 2 Summary 
  • 5th Inning
    • The Oles were threatening to open the scoring after a leadoff triple from Evan Hammonds. Emerson Alberhasky retired the next three batters, two via strikeout, to escape the jam unharmed. 
      • Alberhasky had seven strikeouts in five innings
  • 8th Inning 
    • Matthew Kulesa hit a 2 out triple to give the Oles a chance to score the first run of the game. Conner Funk was able to get Cole Pleimann to ground out to end the inning and keep the game tied. 
    • The Knights loaded the bases with no outs to begin the inning on a hit and two fielder's choices. Will Armstrong picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly to give the Knights the lead. An error by the Oles on a stolen base attempt brought two more Knights home and extended the lead. 
  • 9th Inning 
    • The Oles picked up their first run of the game on an error by Zach Walton. They loaded the bases with one out and Jack Alley tied the game with a 2 RBI single. The Oles left the bases loaded after a fly out to center. 
    • The Knights walked it off on a Gehrig Turner RBI double that brought home Keegan Schmitt, who walked to open the inning.

  • Alberhasky's 9 strikeouts tied the season-high for the Knights in a single game (Joey Ciero vs Western New England) 

Coaches Comments
"I was so proud of what the team showed me in that second game today," said head coach Casey Klunder following an exciting end to game two. "The guys showed a ton of fight and perseverance after St. Olaf was able to tie the game in the top of the ninth. Every player stayed locked in and did what we needed to do close that game out with a win."

The Knights will head to Indianola on Friday to open up American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play against the Simpson Storm. First pitch is scheduled for 6 pm.
