Knights split Saturday at Illinois Wesleyan Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.—The Wartburg softball team (9-9) opened competition at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament Saturday. The Knights fell 14-7 to the host-Titans (8-5) and defeated Lake Forest College (7-6) 9-8.
 
IWU game:
  • The Titans plated three in the first and two in the second for the 5-0 lead
  • Rylie Metz hit a leadoff homerun in the third to make it 5-1
  • Bella Mulder hit a solo homerun in the fourth to make it 5-2
  • In the fifth, Sydney Fellows hit a two-run shot to center to slice the margin to one at 5-4
  • IWU tallied four runs in the bottom of the frame to push the lead to 9-4
  • Metz hit a three-run double to right centerfield in the sixth to make it 9-7
  • The Titans added five in that frame to take the 14-7 lead
  • In their last at-bats the Knights were retired in order to end the game 
Top performers: LFC game
  • Fellows hit a leadoff homerun for the early 1-0 lead
  • The Knights added to their lead in the second with two more runs
  • The Foresters plated one in the third
  • Metz had another solo homer in the bottom of the third to make it 4-1
  • Lake Forest had a two-run homer in the fourth
  • Stephanie Kiefer drove in Bella Mulder from second on her single to left field
  • LFC added five runs in the sixth
  • The Orange and Black added sixth as they scored four runs on four hits which included a suicide squeeze from Jenna Wiebenga, Metz beat the throw on her attempt and Riley Feeley sacrificed in pinch runner Ally Happ
 
Top performers Notes:
  • IWU continues to lead the series lead at 6-0
  • Wartburg owns the series lead at 3-1 over Lake Forest, though the programs had not met since 2003.
  • Mulder's second home run this season
  • Metz's first career home run in the IWU game
  • Fellows' fifth home run of the season
  • Fellows extended her hitting streak to 10 games

The Knights will face DePauw in a doubleheader tomorrow at 9 a.m.
