Women's Soccer Fall to No. 25 Calvin 2-0 in Season Opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Women's soccer opened the 2025 season with a tough test on the road against No. 25 Calvin University in a 2-0 loss on Friday, Aug. 29.
 
Match Summary
  • First Half
    • Calvin gained control of possession early and put pressure on the Wartburg defense in the first 15 minutes with two shots on goal that were both saved by Tulla Jensen
    • Jensen made another save in goal in the 29th minute to keep the match tied at 0-0
    • Minutes later, Greta Rothe was able to find some space in Calvin territory and fire Wartburg's first shot on goal, but Calvin's keeper was there to make the save
    • In the 39th minute, a Calvin corner kick led to the first goal of the match after CeCe McCarthy got past the defense for an unassisted score
    • Calvin took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break
  • Second Half
    • Calvin controlled the beginning of the second half with two corner kicks and three shots, which led to another save from Jensen in the 58th minute
    • Jensen made two more saves in the 60th minute and then another in the 65th minute to keep the deficit at 1-0
    • The Calvin attack continued to be relentless and scored again following a corner kick in the 74th minute when Alexa Boersma found the back of the net with an assist from Mia Judd
    • Wartburg continued to fight hard with late shots on goal from Alli Smith and Nikayla Youngblut, but Calvin was able to hold off Wartburg 2-0 in the season opener
