Knights wrap up Transylvania Invite with Saturday Split

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Wartburg College volleyball team (2-1 overall) closed out its weekend at the Transylvania Invitational with a split on Saturday, sweeping the University of Olivet before falling in three sets to Berry College (Ga.). 

The Knights took down the Comets by scores of 25-16, 25-13, and 25-16, before matching up with an undefeated Berry squad that secured a straight-set win to remain perfect on the season. 
 
WARTBURG 3, OLIVET 0 
The Orange and Black controlled the morning session against Olivet, sweeping the Comets behind strong offensive efforts from Sophie Sedgwick, Anna Sash, and Kaylee Anderson. Peyton Robinson anchored the defense with a match-high 17 digs, while Sedgwick contributed six service aces and 18 assists. Sash paced the Knights with 11 kills, while Anderson also reached double figures with 10 kills. 

SET ONE (1-0) 
Wartburg jumped to a 7-1 lead as Sedgwick delivered two early aces during a six-point swing. Olivet trimmed the deficit to three at 18-15, but the Knights closed the set with a strong finish, capped by another Sedgwick ace in a 25-16 win. Anderson tallied four kills, while Wartburg held the Comets to a -.107 hitting percentage, compared to .176 for the Knights.
 
SET TWO (2-0) 
The Knights built a 16-8 advantage behind Sedgwick's fourth ace of the match and never looked back, taking a 25-13 victory. Wartburg improved its hitting percentage to .294 while holding Olivet to just .068. Anderson pushed her total to seven kills, while Sash added six. Robinson recorded 10 digs in the set, and Sedgwick finished with five of Wartburg's 10 total aces. 

SET THREE (3-0) 
Sash took charge offensively with five kills on .833 hitting in the third frame, leading Wartburg to a 25-16 win and the sweep. The Knights swung .312 in the set, while Olivet was held to an even .000. 
 
BERRY (GA.) 3, WARTBURG 0 
Wartburg was held just to a .039 hitting percentage, as the Knights dropped a straight-set match to Berry. Koudelka led with 10 kills on the afternoon, while Sash finished with seven. Sedgwick piled up 17 assists and Klyn provided three service aces – 10 as a team.  

SET ONE (0-1) 
Berry opened the match with an ace, but Wartburg battled to a 12-9 lead following a kill from Sash. The Knights later held a 23-19 advantage after a Sash ace and earned set point on a Kaylee Koudelka kill. However, Berry closed on a 4-0 run to claim the set, 26-24. Wartburg was limited to nine kills on .107 hitting, while Berry hit .321. Both teams combined for 12 service errors. 

SET TWO (0-2) 
Wartburg built momentum early behind back-to-back kills from Sash and Koudelka and extended its lead to 13-7 following an ace from Aspen Faulk. The Knights stretched the advantage to 17-8 as Sash and Koudelka continued to pace the attack, but Berry rallied to pull within one at 20-19, forcing a Wartburg timeout. The Vikings closed strong to secure the set, 25-22, and a 2-0 lead. 

SET THREE (0-3) 
Berry jumped out to a 12-4 advantage and maintained control throughout the final frame. Wartburg cut the deficit to 18-15, but the Vikings responded to finish the sweep with a 25-16 win. 
 
UP NEXT
Wartburg returns to action next weekend at the St. Kate's Tournament in St. Paul, Minn. The Knights will face three opponents: Wisconsin-Superior (Friday), Hamline University (Saturday), and St. Catherine University (Saturday).
