Men's Soccer Rout Buena Vista 7-1 on Senior Day to Open A-R-C Play

WAVERLY, Iowa – Men's soccer celebrated senior day with a 7-1 rout of Buena Vista University in its American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) opener at home on Saturday, Sept. 27. The Knights are now 3-4-1 overall and 1-0 in A-R-C play, while BVU moves to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in A-R-C play.
 
Match Summary
  • First Half
    • The Knights applied offensive pressure early and often with four shots on goal recorded in the first 10 minutes of play
    • Wartburg was first on the scoreboard when a foul in the box led to an Alima Mmunga successful penalty kick in the 14th minute to make the score 1-0
    • In the same minute, a BVU yellow card led to a free kick from Flori Gembo that found the back of the net to give Wartburg a 2-0 lead
    • The Knights struck again the 28th minute when Kaleab Wendy fired a shot on goal that was saved, but deflected directly to Flori Gembo, who provided a second-straight strike to push the Knights' lead to 3-0
    • Tyler Howe fired a shot on goal that was saved BVU in the 34th minute and then seven minutes later, Wendy got free for another Wartburg goal to push the score to 4-0 headed into halftime
  • Second Half
    • Wartburg continued to look for scoring opportunities early in the second half and found one in the 52nd minute when Gembo delivered a pass to Lwings Kabula, who fired a shot past the keeper to push the lead to 5-0
    • In the 60th minute, Mmunga added his second score of the match with an assist from Diego Sanchez
    • Buena Vista broke up the shutout in the 77th minute with a deep shot from Kendall Bickford
    • Wendy put the finishing touches on a 7-1 win with a goal in the 80th minute after an assist from Peyton Meier
    • Meier and Jackson Haugen each fired late shots, but the Knights finished with a 7-1 win over BVU
