Sash’s block party secures four-set win over Loras

WAVERLY, Iowa – Sophomore Anna Sash posted a career-best 11 blocks to lead the Wartburg College volleyball team (11-5 overall, 2-0 A-R-C) to a four-set victory over Loras Tuesday night inside Levick Arena.

The Knights took set scores of 26-24, 25-27, 26-24, and 25-21, in a match that saw 32 ties and 10 lead changes.

Loras dropped to 4-12 overall and 0-1 in the American Rivers Conference.

Kaylee Anderson and Kaylee Koudelka each dropped in 11 kills to lead the Knights offensively, as Sash rejected 11 to set a new career-high – previous mark was 10 against Transylvania earlier this season.
Wartburg attacked at .167, while holding Loras to just .063. The Duhawks recorded nine service aces, as the Knights put up just two.

Loras found the scoring column for the opening two points of the match. After the Duhawks' short rally, the Knights fired off four-straight points to gain a 4-2 lead while Sophie Sedgwick was behind the line. Loras evened the match at 15 after forcing Wartburg to take a timeout. Wartburg was the first to 20, leading 20-16 after Sedgwick fooled the Duhawks' defense on a dump-over kill. The reigning A-R-C Defensive Player of the Week, Anna Sash, sent back three Loras attack, as Kaylee Koudelka led in the kill category with an early five. The Duhawks fought back in the opening set, but the Knights rallied late to earn a 26-24 victory.

Loras sparked a 6-1 run midway through the second set to lead 13-8. A kill by Kaylee Anderson and a pair of attack errors by the Duhawks later made it just a two-point deficit for the Knights. Wartburg tied things up with a kill from Whitney Klyn, before Loras used another short run to regain a 21-18 advantage. A late push by Wartburg evened it back up at 24 after another Duhawk attack error, but a 27-25 set two Loras win would even the match. Koudelka dropped in seven kills, as Klyn sat at six to lead the Knights.

Wartburg battled from behind in the third after Loras used a serving run to grab a 19–14 advantage. The Knights stormed back behind Sash's presence at the net, sparking a late rally that included kills from Anderson and Klyn. Wartburg erased the deficit and closed strong, with Sash putting away key points and Klyn sealing it at the line with a service ace for the 26–24 win.

The Knights carried their momentum into the fourth, flipping an early Loras lead into control with balanced offense from Anderson, Leah Hayungs, and Sash. Wartburg used a 6–2 spurt in the middle of the set to gain separation and never looked back. The defensive presence from the Knights finished it off, 25–21, clinching the 3–1 victory at Levick Arena.

Wartburg has won nine of the last 12 meetings with Loras, holding a 50-17 lead in the all-time series.
