Macalester Holds off Men's Soccer 1-0

WAVERLY, Iowa – Men's soccer was defeated by Macalester College 1-0 in a defensive battle on Friday, Sept. 5 at Salzwedel field. Following today's contest Wartburg is now 1-1-1 and Macalester moves to 3-0.
 
Match Summary
  • First Half
    • Wartburg applied some offensive pressure early in the match with a corner kick in the second minute and then a Landon Hartsell shot on goal in the sixth minute
    • Macalester had back-to-back corner kicks in the 15th minute, but Wartburg's defense held strong and allowed no shots
    • Flori Gembo fired a shot on goal for the Knights in the 20th minute that was saved by Macalester to keep the match scoreless
    • A minute later, Maclester struck when Chris Frantz was able to find the back of the net with an assist from Nick Kent to give the Scots a 1-0 lead
    • The Knights were unable to put any more shots on goal in the first half and trailed 1-0
  • Second Half
    • Both defenses were smothering the offense early into the second half making it hard
    • In the 61st minute, Lwings Kabula got behind the Scots' defense and had one shot blocked before his next shot deflected off the left post and narrowly missed going into the goal
      • Seconds later, Gembo recorded another shot on goal that was saved by the Scots
    • A red card was issued in the 69th minute on a Macalester player to give Wartburg a man-up advantage the rest of the match
    • Wartburg had 11 shots recorded in the final 20 minutes with just one finding the target, when Aidan Mott fired a shot on goal in the 89th minute
      • Macalester recorded one more shot on goal in the second half that was saved by Henry Eckert
