EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- The Wartburg College men's and women's bowling teams opened the season in impressive fashion at the Stout Open over the weekend, with both squads finishing first in qualifying before winning their respective bracket finals to claim tournament titles.

The tournament featured 32 baker games of qualifying, with 20 games contested Saturday and 12 more Sunday. The top four teams in each field advanced to bracket play, which featured best-of-three matches in the semifinals and a best-of-five championship match.

The Wartburg women established control early, building a lead of more than 200 pins through Saturday's 20 games. The Knights continued to extend their advantage Sunday, finishing the 32-game qualifying portion more than 400 pins ahead of the second-place team to secure the top seed.

Wartburg carried that momentum into bracket play, sweeping its semifinal match 2-0 before claiming the championship with a 3-1 victory to secure the tournament title.

On the men's side, the Knights faced an early challenge, trailing first place by 110 pins following Saturday's qualifying rounds while narrowly holding onto a spot in the top-four bracket. Wartburg responded Sunday with a strong performance, quickly erasing the deficit and building a lead of more than 100 pins by the end of qualifying to earn the top seed.

The Knights carried that turnaround into bracket play, maintaining their momentum through the semifinal and championship rounds to capture the men's tournament title and complete the sweep for Wartburg.

The two championships provide a strong start to the season for the Knights, who will look to build on the opening-weekend success at the Five Seasons Classic next weekend in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
