Wartburg Closes Series With Key Victory Over Nebraska Wesleyan

WAVERLY, Iowa – The Wartburg College baseball team (13-9 overall, 4-6 A-R-C) bounced back following a pitcher's dual against Nebraska Wesleyan with a bounce back 5-4 victory in the series finale over the Prairie Wolves Sunday at Harms Stadium at Hertel Field.

Nebraska Wesleyan (7-16 overall, 2-5 A-R-C) captured the series with a 7-1 win in game one and a 1-0 win in game two.

GAME ONE – Nebraska Wesleyan 1, Wartburg 0
The Prairie Wolves took advantage of a miscue by the Knights in the second inning and took a 1-0 lead. Owen Greco limited the damage by stranding two runners on base, highlighted by three strikeouts in the inning.

Liam Bender singled in the third inning to put Nolan Heard into scoring position, but the Prairie Wolves responded with a pop up and a fielder's choice to escape the inning.

The Knights had a crucial sequence in the fourth inning when the Prairie Wolves had the bases loaded with no outs. Owen Greco struck three batter out in a row to once again get the Knights out of trouble.

Cael Funk entered the game in relief in fhe seventh inning. The Prairie Wolves were able to load the bases once again, but the Knights got out of the inning with a double play.

The Knights had chances in the the last three innings of the game, but were unable to capitalize. The Knights got thrown out at home in the seventh inning, stranded two runners in the eighth inning, and ended the game in the ninth inning with a strikeout. 

GAME TWO – Wartburg 5, Nebraska Wesleyan 4
Nicholas Nin got the start for the Knights in the finale and was able to not allow any runs in the first inning with a key double play with the bases loaded.

Griffin Troha crossed home plate in the first inning to give the Knights their first lead of the game. The Prairie Wolves responded with a game-tying solo home run in the second inning.

The Knights regained and extended the lead in the fourth inning. Tanner Jackson drove in two runs with a single and Bode Nagelmaker added on by driving in another run to give the Knights a 4-1 lead.

The Prairie Wolves responded with an RBI single in the fourth inning and another run in the seventh inning to trail by only one run. Andrew Gallogos added an insurance run for the Knights in the seventh inning with a solo home run to extend the Knights lead to 5-3.

The Prairie Wolves had one last comeback effort in the ninth inning that was shut down by the Knights. Following an RBI single, Conner Funk struck out two batters to earn the save. Nicholas Nin earned the victory in the exciting finale. 

TAKE NOTE
  • Owen Greco had a career-high 13 strikeouts with his start in the first game of today's double-header
  • The Knights had a balanced attack in the series finale with two RBI's from Tanner Jackson, one RBI from Andrew Gallegos, and one RBI from Bode Nagelmaker
  • Andrew Gallegos now has six home runs on the season, which ties him for fifth-best in the American Rivers Conference
  • Additionally, Andrew Gallegos is fifth-best in slugging percentage in the American Rivers Conference
  • Conner Funk earned his fourth save of the season, which is second-best in the American Rivers Conference
  • Wartburg leads the all-time series 16-12, including a 8-7 mark at home.

UP NEXT
Wartburg will travel to Indianola to battle Simpson next weekend. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on Friday, April 3, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at Noon.
