Tyynismaa, Ahern Lead Wartburg’s Final-Day Surge at NCAA Championships

Tyynismaa secures National Runner-Up in 400-meter hurdles; Earns All-American honors in all four qualifying events
LA CROSSE, Wis. -- The Wartburg College outdoor track and field teams capped off an impressive showing at the 2026 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships with All-American performances in seven events on Saturday, led by a national runner-up finish and school record from JoJo Tyynismaa in the women's 400-meter hurdles.

Tyynismaa delivered one of the top performances in program history, earning National Runner-Up honors with a school-record time of 59.26 in the 400-meter hurdles. Her mark eclipsed the previous record held since 2014 and secured her third All-American accolade of the dayv. Tyynismaa finished the national meet with All-American honors in all four of her qualifying events.

Freshman Nathan Ahern also etched his name into the Wartburg record book, breaking his own school record in the men's 800-meter run with a sixth-place finish of 1:49.96. The performance earned Ahern First-Team All-American recognition in his inaugural outdoor season and marked the program's first All-American finish in the event since 2018.

The Wartburg men concluded the national meet seventh in the team standings with 21 points, while the women placed 17th overall with 16.5 points. In total, the Knights amassed 26 All-American performances across the three-day championship event.

Trent Polley opened Saturday competition with a Second-Team All-American finish in the men's javelin throw. Polley recorded a mark of 59.68 meters (195-9) on his opening attempt to place 15th in the national field. The honor marked his second consecutive outdoor All-American accolade in the event, becoming just the fourth two-time outdoor javelin All-American in program history.

The men's 4x100-meter relay team of AJ Wright, Jordan Cleaves, Noah Schmidgall and Alex Kerr secured First-Team All-American honors with a sixth-place finish in 40.58. The performance marked the program's first All-American finish in the event since 2021 and tied for the second-highest national finish in school history.

Tyynismaa and Grace Braden added another pair of First-Team All-American performances in the women's 100-meter hurdles, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively. Tyynismaa crossed the finish line in 13.86, while Braden posted a personal-best time of 13.89 to move to No. 2 all-time in program history. The honor marked Tyynismaa's second All-American accolade of the meet and Braden's first outdoor All-American recognition.

In the men's 5000-meter run, Lance Sobaski earned First-Team All-American status with a fifth-place finish in 14:07.77, while Isaiah Hammerand collected his second All-American honor of the championship with a 16th-place finish in 14:39.89. Sobaski improved upon last season's national finish to earn his third career outdoor All-American accolade, while Hammerand added the 5000-meter honor to his All-American performance in the 10,000-meter run earlier in the week.

The women's 4x400-meter relay quartet of Natalie Bork, Olivia Tollari, Haley Meyer and Tyynismaa closed the championship for the Knights with another First-Team All-American performance, placing fifth nationally in 3:44.72.
