RIVERSIDE, Iowa -- The Wartburg College clay target team claimed the high overall (HOA) team title at the Coe College Sporty 200 Open Sunday, Sept. 20, at Highland Hideaway.

The Knights finished atop the team leaderboard with a score of 888 out of 1,000 targets, finishing 41 targets ahead of the runner-up in the five-team field.

Kelly Maier led the way individually, capturing the high female honor while topping all 38 competitors with a score of 191 out of 200 targets. Maier posted a 95 in the opening round before following with a 96 in the second round.

The Knights also competed in the MidwayUSA Day of Clays Fundraiser Shoot Saturday, with Maier claiming the HOA Lady title. Head coach Russell Malterud also joined the Knights in competition, earning runner-up honors in the field.

"It was a great weekend for the team," head coach Russell Malterud said. "The target difficulty was easier than we had experienced so far, so we were interested to see how that would impact our athletes mentally. They responded in a huge way, a true testament to the work they have put in throughout the fall. The growth all of them have had, punctuated by their performance last weekend, has been extremely rewarding to see as a coach."
