WAVERLY, Iowa — The Knights (0-1-1) lost to Saint Benedict (2-0) 2-1 on Saturday, Sept. 5. The Knights put seven of their 12 shots on goal, while Saint Benedict finished with a 13-12 edge in shots and an 8-7 edge in shots on goal.
Claire Lienhard scored the lone Wartburg goal with a free kick attempt in the 59
th minute that found the back of the net to mark her first career goal.
How It Happened
First Half
- The Knights created early looks through Athena Sheets and Lindsey Overmann, with Overmann's shot saved by Rhianna Anya at 13:29.
- The middle stretch featured chances on both ends: Tulla Jensen saved Eva Gower shots at 14:03 and 22:38, while Tessa Poppen and Kenna Hemann each put attempts on frame for the Knights.
- Ava Gibson forced another save at 24:02, but Saint Benedict took a 1-0 lead at 24:35 on a goal by Tatum Janezich.
- Neither team recorded another shot before halftime, and Saint Benedict led 1-0 at the break.
Second Half
- After each side created early looks, Saint Benedict made it 2-0 at 55:29 when Laila Totushek scored off an assist from Eva Gower.
- Claire Lienhard answered for the Knights at 58:52, scoring to bring the match to 2-1.
- The Knights generated four shots between 62:13 and 72:03, including two Poppen attempts saved, while Jensen made saves at 63:18 and 70:28.
- Jensen added another save on Veronica Warren at 84:51, and Gabby Staedlter sent the Knights' final shot high at 86:15 before Saint Benedict finished with a 2-1 win.
