Chickering's Late Strike Forces 1-1 Draw Against No. 13 Macalester

ST. PAUL, MINN. --- Men's soccer went on the road and forced its second draw of the week against a top-15 opponent as the Knights tied 1-1 against No. 13 Macalester on Sunday, Sept. 6.
 
Following a scoreless first half, the Knights trailed 1-0 in the final 10 minutes of play before Jacob Chickering scored the equalizer in the 83rd minute with an assist from Flori Gembo to secure a draw.
 
How It Happened
First Half
  • Macalester recorded any early off-target shot attempt in the ninth minute and the was the only shot attempt of the first 25 minutes of play as each side played strong defense early on
  • The Knights took the first shots on goal of the match in the 27th and 29th minutes when both Lwings Kabula and Alima Mmunga fired shots that were saved by the Scots to keep the score 0-0
  • Minutes later, Macalester forced a corner kick that led to the first on-target shot for the Scots, but Joseph Svoboda made the save in goal for Wartburg
  • Svoboda made one more save before halftime to keep the Knights deadlocked at 0-0 against Macalester
 
Second Half
  • Each side traded shots on goal to begin the second half as Gembo had an attempt saved in the 49th minute before Svoboda made another save for Wartburg in the 52nd minute
  • Gembo recorded his second shot on goal attempt of the match in the 53rd, but Macalester was once again able to make the save
  • Svoboda kept the match scoreless with saves in the 59th and 65th minutes to bring his total to five
  • Following another Wartburg save in the 78th minute, Macalester broke the tie in the 81st with a low shot that found the back of the net
  • The Knights answered right away as Gembo dished a pass to Chickering, who made the finish to score the equalizer in the 83rd minute
  • Despite a late shot on goal from Gembo, neither team was able to add another goal in the final minutes to make it a 1-1 final
