WAVERLY – Wartburg College posted a pair of 2-0 Iowa Conference men’s and women’s soccer victories in front of its home crowd at the Wartburg Soccer Complex Oct. 5.
The Knights’ women’s squad, improving to 7-3-1 overall and 3-0 in the league, put up a sparkling 24-2 advantage in shots against visiting Coe. Coach Sara Johnson’s team broke up a scoreless contest when sophomore forward Kaylee Benning (Waverly) took a pass from fellow junior midfielder Katy Wendt (Bettendorf)in the 15th minute for her third goal of the year. Wendt, finishing up a three-point evening, scored her 10th goal less than nine minutes later.
Wendt and freshman midfielder Kelli Anderson (Cary, Ill.), combined for nine of the home side’s shot attempts. Coe sophomore goalkeeper Jillian Reynolds kept the Kohawks (3-6 overall, 0-2 IIAC) close throughout with eight saves, while the Orange and Black’s keeper duo of sophomore Monica Noti (Carol Stream, Ill.), and junior Haley Hergert (Amana) pieced together the team’s third shutout of the year.
In the men’s match, coach Kirk Artist’s squad kept its league record unblemished with its first home win. Senior goalkeeper Bob Brown (Solon) earned his third shutout, and the Knights (6-4 overall, 3-0 IIAC) had a 13-11 shots advantage.
Senior midfielder Lucas Prater (Springfield, Mo.), joined senior forward Jon Farrell (Washington, Mo.), at the top of the program’s goal chart with his fourth in the 38th minute off a free kick. Sophomore defender David Sanford (St. Peters, Mo.), tallied his second, taking a perfectly placed corner kick off the foot of freshman defender Bob Brown (Solon) and heading it into the Kohawk net in the 53rd minute.
Junior midfielder Nathan Gottsacker (Bloomington, Ill.), led the shots category for the Knights with three.
Wartburg continues its 2010 IIAC slate with a key clash with Loras College of Dubuque Friday, Oct. 8, at the campus soccer field. The women’s match has a 5:30 p.m. start with the men slated for a 7 p.m. start.
NOTES: Women – Wendt’s multiple-point night was her sixth of the season. … Wartburg’s women are 3-0-1 in their last four matches, while the men are 4-1 in their last five.
